Mirror site? A Back up plan

I'm wondering is it a good idea to host a site in two different hosting companies as a backup (mirror site). Or is there any way to do a back up your site. I heard that if you set up a blog using blogspot, you can register with wordpress and backup your blog with it. Is there any consequences to search engine ranking if you have 2 identical sites.
