Default HPI Funds - Whats the Catch?

I'm not one normally to throw money at things that could be scams, but I had a spammer register on my forums, and when I clicked the link to check it out (they were sneaky, and the URL could have been a legit site), I found it was just a page with affiliate links to High Performing Investment Funds.

On paper, these things sound OK - you can invest a dollar or more, and they take paypal / egold - the money compounds daily and you can request payout whenever you like.

Whats the catch with these things? Are they also 'high risk'? Are they a total scam where the companies just take your money and run?

They can't be legit (I'm guessing), but I'm curious what the scam is....
