Hi MaggL6,
First of all welcome to THB and congratulations on your new adventure!
I found myself in your situation when I was first starting out, so I will share with you what I have learned.
Unfortunately, there is a "stigma' attached to network marketing as you say. People are naturally skeptical anyway and with some of the negative things that have happened over the years in our industry, it does make it more difficult to overcome the perceptions.
1. The first thing you should do is really believe in the product/service you are promoting. You should be using the product/service yourself before you ever promote it to someone else. Learn all you can about your business and products. Is there a high demand for your product or service? You should become an "expert" in your business. Then, as you are talking to people about your business, you can do so with confidence and your prospects will sense your confidence and begin to trust you.
2. If you are using the products or service that you are promoting, people will notice that. They will ask questions about it. If you are prepared with knowledge and confidence, you have the opportunity to promote it to your prospect. You should also have the basic materials on hand such as business cards, flyer's, promotional material from your company, etc. If that person is not interested, then ask them for a referral. You should just "be yourself" and try not to be "to aggressive". You can put out flyer's and business cards on area bulletin boards and other places where you are allowed to advertise your business. You can also get a booth at area craft shows, church festivals, and other types of festivals.
3. As far as the internet, you should have a website. Your company may offer one or you can get one yourself. As you say this forum and other forums as well. You can start a blog about your business and share your expert knowledge with others. I have found that "free" advertising doesn't work as well as something that you actually paid to advertise such as a website that has huge traffic and would be interested in what you have to offer. Internet advertising can be more difficult. You can't just "set it and forget it". You should always follow up with your prospects as you still need to build a relationship with them.
I hope this helps you in some way. This is all based on what I have learned. if you have any other questions, please let me know.
