How to start RideShare Driving as an Independent Uber Partner Driver

Want to become an Uber Driver but don’t know what the Uber driver and car requirements are for 2020? It can be challenging to find information about what is needed to get started for driving for yourself. We will make it easy for you to get started by providing you with exactly what you need to do.

First, I want to mention, you must know how to signup for Uber before you can become an Uber Partner Driver.

Once you sign up to become an Uber Driver and get access to your Uber Partner Driver Dashboard, simply complete all the steps listed below.

Uber Partner –  Car Requirements for 2020

Do you want to become an Uber Driver Partner but are not sure whether your car meets all of the Uber vehicle requirements? UberX, Uber XL, and UberSelect allow you to use your personal vehicle without commercial licensing or insurance, but your car still must meet the basic criteria listed here.

On the other hand, if you want to drive for UberBLACK, UberSUV, UberLUX, or UberLUX SUV your car must meet stricter standards.

2020 Minimum requirements for all vehicles

  • Model year 2005  or newer (no older than 15 years)
  • Minimum of 5-7 Factory-Installed Seatbelts
  • No salvaged or rebuilt vehicles
  • 4-door car or minivan
  • Good condition with no cosmetic damage
  • No commercial branding
  • Pass the Uber vehicle inspection requirements

Registration

Uber accepts both official and temporary registration documents. The vehicle does not need to be registered in your name to qualify.

Insurance

All Uber partners must maintain their own insurance policy in accordance with state and local laws. In addition, Uber maintains automobile liability insurance on behalf of all U.S. partners.

Uber Partner – Vehicle Inspection Requirements for 2020

Here’s some basic info first regarding your upcoming Uber vehicle inspection: Uber has car inspection stations set up in most cities where Uber operates. See the list of different options to get your Uber vehicle inspection done above. When you bring your car to an Uber Activation Center, they’ll inspect it at no cost and usually pretty quickly while you’re waiting. In certain areas and cities, Uber pays a cash bonus when you get your first car inspection.

What Are The Items On The Checklist?

So what are the inspectors looking for when they check your vehicle? First, they’ll ask you for the year, make and model of your vehicle. Mostly, you’ll have to turn on and off headlights, signal, honk, step on the brake, etc. The inspector will also open and close your doors, adjust your front seats and test the seat belts. The inspection itself doesn’t take more than 10-15 minutes.

This is the complete list of items they will check:

  • Lights:
    • Headlights
    • Tail lights
    • Turn indicator lights
    • Brake lights
  • Brakes and steering:
    • Brake pads/shoe thickness
    • Emergency/parking brake
    • Steering mechanism
  • Windows and other glass:
    • Windshield
    • Rear window and other glass
    • Windshield wipers
  • Seats and doors:
    • Front seat adjustment
    • Safety belts for driver and each passenger
    • Doors (open / close / lock)
  • Other items:
    • Horn
    • Speedometer
    • Bumpers
    • Muffler and exhaust system
    • Tires, including tread depth
    • Interior and exterior rear view mirrors

Pass Or Fail?

What To Do When You Fail The Vehicle Inspection?

If the reason you’re not passing is minor, such as your brake light not working, they can put your car inspection on hold for the day, and pass you when you return the same day with the item(s) fixed. If you can’t get it fixed the same day, you’ll fail and have to do the inspection all over again.

Inspection Passed!

Once you have passed the vehicle inspection, you will be given an official Uber sticker which you are required to place on your windshield when you are actively picking up Uber riders.
