Keyword List
You need an extensive keyword list for a successful PPC campaign. Here are some tips that will help you create a targeted and profitable keyword list.
1. Make a list of all your products and services you’d like to promote. Separate them by product/service category, product/service name, or AdGroup. Then,
2. Add an adjective to each keyword (brand names, price, features, comparisons, reviews, colors, sizes) or action (buy, purchase, find, low cost, best price). For example “canon SD1000”, or “purchase canon SD1000”, compare canon sd1000, etc. Concentrate on 3-5 word phrases because they’re more specific and convert better.
3. Use Google Keyword Tool (
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal) to find variations and related keywords. Then, transfer them to a spreadsheet.
4. Before placing an AdWords Campaign, create a list of negative keywords (keywords that will prevent your ad from being displayed.). You need to make sure that your ad is only being displayed for relevant searches. If you’re selling cell phones, you want to include the word “free” as a negative keyword so when someone types “free cell phones” in Google you don’t get an unwanted click on your ad. (In AdWords put a “-“ before each keyword).
5. Use WordTracker and KeywordDiscovery for more keywords. Both of these sites have a limited but free keyword search.
6. Check your competitors’ web page source code. Visit your competitors’ sites and click “view” on your browser toolbar, then click on “page source code”. On the box that opens, search for <meta name=keywords> to find the keywords they use in their sites.
7. Ask your merchant partners for a keyword list. Call your merchant’s affiliate manager.
8. Include common misspellings and typos for your keywords. Go to searchspell.com
9. Consider adding singular, plural and apostrophes of your keywords. (i.e. shoe, shoes, shoes’)
10. Identify common abbreviations and acronyms for your keywords. (CD vs Compact Disc, TV vs Television, etc.)
11. Can your keywords be merged, hyphenated or separated? (email, e-mail, e mail, or ebook, e-book, e book).
Good luck with your campaign!
