Hello Cathy,
That's a good question. I am not claiming this as gospel, but I am going to give you my personal opinion on the matter.
I recommend AGAINST buying lists of email addresses, for the following reasons:
1) They have not truly requested information from you--they may or may not have requested information from the company that sold you the list
2) Either way, spam complaints tend to be high from purchased email lists
3) You'll have to import them into your autoresponder, and the more reliable autoresponders like Aweber do not allow you to import purchased email lists
4) If you import them anyway, your autoresponder will almost certainly require them to respond to a verification message before sending them any emails. Confirmations tend to be very low and spam complaints tend to be high as a result, which could cause you to be banned by your autoresponder service (I know Aweber can and does ban accounts for this)

Instead of buying emails, I recommend that you build your own opt-in list. One method that is highly effective for this is

Rent-A-List

They are my favorite service for email marketing and list-building. They actually guarantee that you will get a certain number of opens, or they re-run the campaign for you.

In this case, you write the ad copy, but Rent-A-List mails it from their servers, to their list of business-opportunity-seekers who have specifically requested to receive information from Rent-A-List. If they go to your lead capture page and opt-in, then they have also requested information from you and can be considered a high-quality lead.

Hope that helps!

I agree with Rob, it is usually not a good idea to buy a list since these people did not ask to be on your list and many will see your email as spam. Building your own list however is a great idea. I have not used the company Rob recommended, but I use ListBuilderPro and other services for co-registration purposes. Co-registration is considered by many the most cost-effective way to build a list.

We are getting ready to release an article about co-registration shortly.

Rob, please elaborate on your experience with this company. What kind of success have you had?

ListBuilderPro is also a great resource to build your list. Having a strong, responsive opt-in mailing list can help you be successful in any business opportunity you join. It is also a great way to market affiliate products.

With Rent-A-List, results have varied from my campaigns, depending on the quality of my ad copy, the appeal of my lead capture page, and the time of the week I've done the campaign. The key to successful email marketing is to get the RIGHT MESSAGE to the RIGHT PEOPLE at the RIGHT TIME.

So don't spend your last dollar on a Rent A List campaign and then despair if you don't get a sale from that campaign. I HAVE had campaigns where I didn't make any sales right away. But for example, two weeks ago I did a $200 campaign to 5000 business opportunity seeker prospects, and got 115 opt-ins, 1 new associate and 1 Platinum sale ($2000 profit for me).

My autoresponder followup system and call center will be working on turning the other 113 into sales.

The moral of the story is that email advertising with Rent-A-List has to be something CONSISTENT, and that if done properly you will have great long-term results. But it's not a 'PUSH HERE TO GET RICH' button.

If any readers would like to try it, you can create a free account at

Rent-A-List

and see how it works.

Hope that review helps,

A total waste of money and time. By the time you get the addresses they are all washed up. Most have been opt out and don't even attempt to call any of them if you have a phone number. The yahoo addresses are bunk as is Gmail also. Spam conversion is .001 % and half of them will ask for a refund. My advice is to stay clear of email purchasing unless you are purchasing a guaranteed proven customized lead program for your niche. Those type of leads are pre-qualified for you and are eagerly waiting your contact.
