Default Website usability

It is really important for your website to have a high usability, meaning that visitors can find what they are looking for easily.

I can recommend the following book about that topic by Steve Krug:

Don't Make Me Think

Usability is a very important factor in any successful website, I didn't know that there is a website for it so thanks for sharing, I was following some general ideas of usability like easy navigation etc.
There are also companies that do website usability services, and they don't come cheap!

Another resource is Jakob Nielson who is an internet usability expert that charges big bucks like you mentioned Dactyl, and also has a lot of info on his site. The most interesting thing about his site is that it is not at all how I would ever think to build a site, yet I find myself cruising around his site for hours. The best thing about him is that he has done lots of original studies on a large scale, and isn't just making fact about what he thinks is best.

Every online business is completely different though. What works for one site won't necessarily work for another. I strongly believe in adding some sort of live tracking through a live chat service or web statistics to literally watch and record how visitors move through your site. You never know if you have a black hole that visitors can't navigate out of, or a page that for one reason or another cause people to jump ship if you don't have any way to track it.

You can use any live chat software to monitor what your visitor's do, but such programs do store this info, I am sure there is a tracking software for this purpose, but I don't know any of them, I think its worth the investment, especially if you get a good amount of visitor's and you have something to sell online.
