Default Promoting on the web

If you have a website or business online and you are looking for free ways to get exposure I am going to explain a system that will get traffic to whatever you are marketing.

This system is the basics of what you are going to learn from any of the "wealth programs" for sale online so you can now save your money.

This involves completely free ways to market. I will not discuss any of the Pay Per Click like Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing or MSN Adcenter because these PPC programs are very difficult to be successful with unless you have an advanced knowledge of how they work. Trust me you can lose hundreds or thousands of dollars if you do not know what you are doing.

Understanding Keywords

Keywords and phrases are key for search engine listing. When building a website, blog, hub, squidoo lens, etc. you have to think about your target audience and what they are going to be typing in that little search box.

Keywords and phrases are the foundation of everything you are going to be doing.

Research

Once you decide what it is you are going to try and make money with you should spend time at the search engines trying different keyword and phrases to see what your competition is doing.

You want to look for highly relevant keywords and phrases that relate to your business or product.

As an example:

If you wanted to start a dog obedience training company it would do you no good to use the keyword "dog" because there are millions of results using this keyword and the chances of getting a high search engine ranking is unlikely.

Instead you want to focus on "long-tail keyword phrases" such as dog behavior problems, train my dog, how to train my dog, etc.

Try many of these phrases in the search engines and look for one that have a lower number of search results. This way you have a better chance of a higher ranking in search results and your link will be seen.

Building Around Keywords

Once you determine your target keywords and phrases you can build your website around them. Scattering them throughout the text of your site but not over doing it because the search engines will consider it spamming and will hurt you. Less than 1% of overall text is a good baseline.

Submitting To Search Engines

These days you really should not have to submit to search engines as they search the net for sites and site updates on a continual basis. It certainly does not hurt to submit but if you are going to do it then I would do it manually and not through a service and there is no need to pay for it.

Building Backlinks

Building backlinks is one of the most effective ways to increase PR (page ranking). Google pays special attention to backlinks.

A backlink is exactly what it sounds like, a link from a site back to your site. Being able to backlink from a site that already has a high PR will help much more than one with no or a low PR.

The reason for this is when Google sees backlinks to your site they assume your content must be important because all these sites are lniking to it. If your site is important then they want to push it up in the ranking.

This is just a general rule as the Search Engines use very complex formulas that change all the time relating to rankings but it is nonetheless effective.

Techniques For Backlinks & Gaining Traffic

Blogs - ANYONE who has a website marketing a product or service should have a blog linking to that site. Create a nice simple blog that is relevant to your website utilizing your same keywords and phrases. Once finished using a pinging service such as pingomatic or pingmyblog to let the blogging engines know you have created a blog. Hopefully one or more of these blogging engines will pick up your blog that has links to your site.

You should also use the pinging service every time you update your blog.

Hubpages & Squidoo - Create both a Hubpages Hub & A Squidoo Lens utlizing your keywords and phrases and add links to your blog AND your website. Use the pinging services on these as well.

Keep in mind you do not want to post exact duplicate content on any of these pages because the search engines do not like duplicate content.

Social Bookmarking Sites

These sites are great because they are basically a way for people to "share" their favorite sites with one another. They are very easy to use and there are hundrds of these sites. You just create a free account and add your favorite sites (your website, blog, hub, lenses) and provide a little information about them. They also allow you to attach keywords to your bookmarks for people to use when they are searching tht e sites for anything.
Add your Hub & Lens links to your blog.

Article Submission Sites

These sites allow authors to create and post articles on various topics and place links to reference sites. Each of these sites has its own set of rules about length of article and where, how and what type of links you can put in the articles. You will want to produce a minimum of 10 articles realting to your site. Place some links directly to your site but also place some to your blogs, hubs and lenses as well.

My favorite article site is ezinearticles because they seem to get preference with Google. I believe this is because of their rules. You cannot place "affiliate" links in articles there.

There are many of these sites so you can just do a search for article submission.

In Summary

This is just a basic system that will help you with search engines and getting traffic to your site. Sites like Hubpages, Squidoo & Article Sites generate their own traffic and you will get visitors just from the people surfing those sites and coming across your content.

There are many more things involved with optimizing a site for the search engines and there are many free resources to help you with that.

Search Engine ranking is not something that happens overnight unless you get lucky with a keyword or phrase that is under utilized.

As an example I have a hub about a game I play online and I realized there were not many resources in the search engines realting to the game. I created a hub about the game and linked it to a webpage that I placed Google AdSense ads. By the nest day I was on first page at the top on Google and Yahoo using the same system I just detailed above and I get about 300 hits a day to that hub. It gives me about $2-$3 a day in Adsense revenue just from the links from the hub to my webpage.

That was a lucky case but it can be done with research.

If anyone would like to add techniques they use to this thread it could be a good way for folks to be able to start getting some traffic to their sites for free.

Free is of course the best price.

AWESOME INFORMATION! I find this highly useful as our company does not allow us to build our own individual sites (brand recognition can go askew if everyone is out there doing their own thing and representung the company is 1,000 different colors, fonts, and individual perception f good common sense posting of content!) So by blogging, utilizing network sites and backlinking with one another ---there really is no need for anything else! We are not allowed to submit our ciorportae sites or use adwords etc... so this information is right up my alley!

Jonki,

Your article is one of the best I've seen in a forum. You have your facts straight and you've written it in a way that most folks can understand. I just had to take a minute to say - 'well done.'

Blessings,
Angie

Excellent article, joniki! It´s really not that difficult to get your site/blog indexed and making money online.Just research the right keywords before writing content, and build your articles around those keywords.
