The only place I know of is from forums, try posting on forums, lots are ailling to invest in a good project, the "other offers and requests" section here is a good place to start with

True, but some projects are big, they cant be handled by an indivisual, that's why people seek sponsors. However, If your able to start the business on your own, then go ahead, thats always better than having a sponsor who may or may not know anything about the business your in.

If its a brand new community, you probably wont be able to offer much, some forums hold contests and sometimes it has a vB license, you might want to look out for those.
My advise is, start the community with one of those free forum scripts like phpbb, once the community grows look for sponsor's your chances would be way better in that case.

I had a phpBB in the past also and the export to vBulletin went flawlessly. vBulletin is a great system but in my opinion it's kind of "heavy" Meaning that the HTML code is so huge.
