Re: Work from home
Wow, ain't it the truth! You can't just sit around and wait for the money to roll in. I've seen very few, if any, business opportunities online or offline that allow a person to do nothing for something. There's a real popular "system" being promoted right now that sells that very idea. I'm sure there are quite a few, actually. The sad thing about the one I'm referring to is that it's casting a cloud over a good business with a good product. People are starting to believe that this "system" and the product they're promoting as their first income stream are one in the same when if fact they very much are not.
I hear a lot of people concerned that there shouldn't be a start-up cost for a home based business. I guess I don't quite understand that logic. The start-up costs in most offline businesses are in the multiple thousands of dollars. Usually tens of thousands of dollars. Why would there not be any start-up costs in an online business as well? I would welcome any comments on that.
The flip side of that coin is home-based employment. I think the line between home-based business and home-based employment is often blurred. The way I see it, in a business you are self-employed with all of the start-up costs falling squarely on you. In employment, you are working for someone else and the responsibility for start-up and all subsequent cost should be up to your employer. Some exceptions to that would be minor costs and incidental cost such as equipment costs if your anwering phones at home and that type of thing. Does anybody agree/disagree with that?

Re: Work from home
Very well said, Jeremy. I actually came close to crossing the line between home business and home employment recently when the customer service company that I was working with turned from using independent contractors to making everyone an employee instead.
If you are concerned about unemployment, paying your own taxes, and those sorts of things, then home employment is great. I, however, would much rather be in a business of my own, so I left the customer service business and took up writing instead

Yes, let's talk software; and can I make things work without a land line? My home base (the place I rarely get to visit anymore) has no phone service unless I want to pay $1500 to install a microwave phone. Even internet is satellite based @ $60 a month. Ideas? (Can't move).

Re: Work from home
Hi Longrider, there's opportunity in the problem you are facing...
Perhaps you can provide a service to the people in your area by setting up an internet cafe of sorts...
You get what i mean?

Re: Work from home
Hi Everyone,
Sorry it's taken so long to respond. I have to travel 50 miles one way to post. To offer an internet cafe of sorts would not be very practical. There are only 50 people in my community, most of which have satellite based service for their internet. There are no phone lines anywhere out here, communication is through microwave or cell service. My home is located 10 miles from the nearest main road and is very isolated. There is only one business within a 40 mile radius. My nearest neighbor is 5 miles away. What I am trying to do is start out with a way to have internet employment no matter where I am, then work into some kind of online business. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Longrider

Re: Work from home
Wow Longrider...
Great place to be in but kinda isolated perhaps. It depends. City-dwellers wanna be away from the crowd and vice versa.
Since you mentioned employment, take a look at what type of skills you have right now that you can offer for paid income.
Some examples are writing, graphics design, coding, software development, website design etc etc.
Let us know and we can advice ya further.

Re: Work from home
Longrider,
Are you interested in sales? Some people do well at that and some don't. It can be a really good deal for those that excel at it and really frustrating for those that don't. What are your thoughts on that?
