I've been writing in for a long time. In fact, that's what I earned my degree in. I started "officially" combining my writing and knowledge of web development and search engine tactics about a year ago. The difference is that now I read 5-10 hours a week about all aspects of
SEO and work that knowledge into my writing. It’s interesting, but before the 2 terms
SEO and copywriting came together, good paying freelance or contract writing jobs were hard to come by. Now I’m being contacted about
SEO copywriting more than any other reason. I have a wide range of client types, from those who have a brand new site that needs to be filled with content, to those that need articles to bulk up their site, to off-shore
SEO firms/article factories with hundreds of “
SEO articles” that need to be re-written in an Americanized, search engine friendly manner.
Watching the shift in the industry is extremely interesting. Over the past year or so since
SEO has become a “household” name, more people are realizing that they need content to attract the search engines. What I find even more interesting is that the #1 goal of people asking for content is to attract the search engine – not to attract and retain the actual readers. The reason search engines employ the tactics they do for ranking content is to help a searcher find absolutely relevant content.
The general mindset of people that come to me rarely ever mention the end reader and are only focused on how the search engine will react to the content. There are companies out there that employ low wage off-shore production writers who know nothing more than general knowledge about various subjects, who are hired to crank out hundreds of generalized articles. Then I get them to rework. These articles will eventually be submitted to free article sources for the purpose of building backlinks. It’s not quality content by any means and the result is even more junk to wade through when searching. I trust though that Google will find a way to identify this content from pure, non-manufactured content. I realize that was a lot more than you asked for… I could get really passionate about this topic so I’d better stop before I fill up your board…
