Default Is selling online often profitable?

I never experienced selling stuffs online but then I just bought myself a shirt from a friend who sells her stuff online. Many people are doing this now since internet is very relevant in communicating with each other nowadays and also the buyer sees almost the real merchandise with the use of internet too. I wonder if it's that really profitable or it still depends on what your products are. If it's hot or not, and if it is in or out.

I don't have any experience too, with regards to selling online. But there are people who are earning from it like selling in ebay. I guess, it totally depends on the kind of products you will be offering. If there's a demand for your product then you have a market.

I agree, if there is a demand (especially a huge one) then you have a market. Ebay would probably be a good place to start. But you have to consider the fact that a lot of people are into online selling now, and chances are, there's somebody else selling the same stuff as you do. So you got to try and offer something else, be a little bit different. Maybe be a bit cheaper than others?

I agree with you. It can be done - but you always have to give a little more than your competitors.

I foind with ebay that it eventually ends up costing more then you make! You basically are giving your stuff away because everyone is selling the same thing! I was selling body jewelry and was doing great the first week...then everyone else was selling it cheaper...so I was selling 500 belly rings for $25.00!!! Thats crazy! If you want success selling online you have to have something rare or offer it cheaper then the others. Trust me...the fees added up fast too!

Good Luck!

I would say that online selling has the potential of being highly profitable. You have the advantage of being open 24/7, and if the system is automated enough, you can run it on minimal staff. Low overhead, can be run out of your home, plus you are not just limited to the local economy for potential customers as a brick and mortar store would be.

However, you still have to market and advertise to bring in customers just as you would if you had a regular walk-in type store.

I myself doesnt have any experience in selling goods online. However, nowadays this online shopping is becoming popular. I have read in another forum that this girl is selling everythings what she can sell online in order to sustain her daily allowance. At first she is getting profit from it until she runs out of things to sell. Now, she's worried where to find goods to sell in cheaper price. That is not a good example for a successful online selling.

Smile Selling online

The best bit of advice i can give you all is that whatever you are thinking on selling online try to be different in any way possible. If you are different in just the slightest way then a customer will buy from you instead of your competitors.

(1) Think outside of the box
(2) Find a niche market
(3) First class customer service
(4) Offer something more/different than your rivals

Stick with those rules and you wont go far wrong!

I agree with Igauresh. Like what our economics teachers taught us, in any business, demand and supply plays an important role. You can sell clothings, food, accessories and compete with existing sellers but if these things are not what people demand for, it is but useless. You will profit nothing. I think one needs to consider the target market. Say, if you are skilled in making earings, bracelets, etc. you can make it your business. But you will need to think ahead who will be your target market. You may start by calling your old friends, relatives, acquaintances. Give them samples. And since there are already so many skilled jewel makers out there who are also selling their products, you will need to strategize how to sell them effectively.
