Default What are the rules in email marketing?

I've read in one of the threads that there are rules in email marketing. It didn't say what these rules are, though so I though I'd make a new thread. What are the specific rules in email marketing--those rules that would prevent lawsuits and your IP adress being banned.

Please do let us know about this. I am on the other side of the fence in this. I have started getting so much spam mail in my gmail account - that it is getting very irritating.
How does one stop this ? It is being filtered into the spam folder - but it is just annoying.

I simply erase my spam, that's what I do with them. But they keep on sending you messages right, so when I'm in the mood, I just click the unsubscribe button and there, no more mails from them. If you're using yahoo you could also click the "report spam" button. I don't know what they'd be doing after that but maybe it would help.

You need to follow the can spam laws. The best way to avoid your IP from being banned is to us a third party autoresponder system like Getresponse and Aweber. They require a double opt-in. You can still get banned even if you follow all the rules. Some people who double-opt in and want your information still may report you as spam if they simply had a bad day. You most likely will not get fined for the infractions unless you are really spamming people. You can get "unbanned" from some ISPs if you pay a fine and give them an explanation and information about your campaign. Otherwise you are SOL.
