Is this still true, or have newsletters faded out of the limelight? It used to be that anyone trying to make a trusted name for themselves online would start a newsletter that people could join. People are getting smarter about spam, though, and are reluctant to give out their e-mail addresses. Do you run a newsletter and is it profitable to you? |

Our social service organisation has a newsletter and we have a mailing list of over 10,000 people. Most of them know us well, and accept our emails. How many of them read them - I do not know, but the hots on our site always increase for a few days.

If you inform the people about what they're signing up for, then you could make sure that those people really wanted the information you would be providing them and that includes some advertisements if you want.

Newsletters is still an effective way to inform customers regarding developments of your products and services. I guess people have become wise to spam and has a separate account for newsletters and such things.

Also, Internet Marketers are using Get Response email system that takes a lot of the mistakes out of e-mail marketing. People have double opt in and all their information is collected name email and IP address,. This way if you have to defend yourself for a spam charge you can say "hey they signed up...twice" I've only heard of one prosecution for spam and it was an extreme case. Most times your IP will be black listed and you won't be able to send out e-mails. Your ISP can cancel your account for spam too. You need to be careful with e-mail marketing. There is money to be made but you also must follow the rules.

What I know about email marketing is that you only have to inform your clients what information they would be receiving and the marketer should always get their consent before sending emails. I don't know the specific rules to be followed. Can anyone post it here?
