I have a few free wbsites and a blog, my next move is a paid forum. Is it very bad practice to put your own links on each of your sites? I was told Google frowns on this as cheating.

I have been told the same thing; this is where reciprocal links come in handy. Try not to acquire too many too quickly as Google frowns upon this as well.
