I think affiliate programs are also a good way to earn an income. There were a few affiliate programs I tried to engage in the past but I could not proceed because of the marketing aspect of the endeavor. That's where I get stuck.

Affiliate programs also require expenses in order to generate an income. Some newbies would only utilized the free advertising sites not knowing this cannot generate targeted traffic to their business sites.

Clarence, you can utilize the publisher programs of some affiliate programs for free and earn income to turn it around and use for buying the proper targeted traffic to your site.
I noticed some companies were now letting you convert your earned income directly into return traffic.

The affiliate programs are one of the way of earning money with or without your own website. If you dont have a website, you can use forums, blogs and network advertising like Adwords etc., to earn affiliate commissions. If you have a website, you should have a high traffic to get profit from it. Free advertising makes you get a huge traffic to your website but not leads. Paid advertisements get you less traffic but more leads. Please Remember that getting high rank in Alexa won't help you to get more leads. The intelligent way of utilising these traffic and leads makes you successfull in your online business.

I am not sure what you are referring to here,is it the adwords process or writing copy or having/not having a website that stopped you? Affiliate programs are an excellent way to make money.You can use an affiliate program that complements the business you are in or you can promote someone else's product without knowing anything about it,the possibilities are endless.There is certainly a lot to learn and I am still learning,but i am enjoying it and I would like to answer your question if I can.

When using a affilaite program to make a extra source of income, do not become dependent on it.

There is alot of work to do to be able to get money from your website with affiliates on it and that area of sales is becoming saturated.

If you plan on creating a affiliate based website, I strongly suggest that you have another source of income with it because you will have bad days and you can not depend on affiliate income to pay your living expenses.

Affiliate programs are great, but if you dont have traffic you wont get money. You have to remember, not everyone will click on your ads. Make sure they are specific to your content and use Text more than banners. If you use text put a picture above the text. This will draw attention to the text. Do not put a banner above the text. If you do then you wont get clicks.

One thing that I really do not like about affiliate programs is that if you are writing a review and give great information and the person says to themselves "Ohh, I think I am going to give this a try," or "I am going to buy this sometime," then they might not use your link and then you won't get creditted for it. Example of this:

People read your reviews then type in www.true.com instead of clicking the logo, you lose out.

It is a matter of getting targetted traffic mostly and making a great sales pitch,

Jason has a very good point.

I average around 50 hits a day on www.officialsurveypage.com. Out of which 20 will click on my links and only 5 will sign up for anything.

Takes time and reputation!

That is still great statistics though.

What I mean though is that someone will just click your ad and then remember the domain name or write it down and go get their credit card, which they could then proceed in rewriting the URL in without going through you.

If you do create a great review, don't always expect the best results.
