Default VAT Registration?

This is mostly for UK / EU people, but I'd be interested to know if any of you have chosen to register for VAT even though you're below the turnover where it is required.

I do a lot of transactions internationally that would not be eligible for VAT charging, so I think I could benefit by claiming it back on things I buy, but I'm not entirely certian of that yet, and I am concerned about the need for audited accounts, etc.

If anyone has actually benefitted from VAT registration, then I'd like to hear why you chose to register, and how much work it has been for you.
