Do you need to get one of these before you start your business or do you wait untill at the end of the year? Someone told me to do it now because I can get discounts online for buying at certain places in bulk. Is that true?

Not necessarily, it all depends on what kind of business it is going to be. Some businesses can be run as doing business as (dba's) and others should be licensed and incorporated.
