Default Bill Gates and Google

Seems like Gates is really pissed off from Google, word is, MSN will start paying people to search through their website

Bill Gates talking about Google offering "me too" products...isn't that the proverbial pot calling the kettle black?

Other than coming up with the idea of 'bundling' their word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation package in order to beat the competition, Microsoft hasn't exactly been 'innovating' (to use their own buzzword) new products. Their whole product line is basically comprised of "me too" products!

Windows >> Mac OS was first mass-market GUI

Windows Server >> Can anyone say Novell?

Internet Explorer >> Netscape (and Mosaic preceding it) were the first browsers

MSN >> preceded by plenty of portals/search engines

Tablet PC >> In the 80s Microsoft put Go out of business through illegal contracts with PC makers and 20 years later they decide to 'innovate' by creating a tablet PC

Xbox >> nice machine, but nothing exactly innovating there

Media Center PC >> Media Center is leagues more powerful, Apple had the basic idea when it introduced the MacTV in the late 80s. Just to try to be fair, I'll give Microsoft this one.

As for the 'innovative' features of Windows itself:

MSN Messenger >> AOL Instant Messenger was there first

Windows Media Player >> Quicktime, Real Player

Desktop Search >> Google desktop, Apple Spotlight

Vista Virtual Folders >> Mac OS X Smart Folders

Read RSS in IE >> Read RSS in Firefox, Safari

Tabs in IE >> Firefox, Safari, etc.

Windows Vista Display Driver Model >> Mac OS X Quartz

Windows Vista Security Features >> Unix over 30 years ago

Registry >> No else has done this...I wonder why?

DLLs, IRQs, etc >> More Windows original ideas...

Microsoft Bob >> Arguably Microsoft's biggest attempt at actually innovating the computer interface although it never went anywhere. At least Melinda got to marry Bill after this project tanked...

I could go on for days about Microsoft's 'innovations'. These are just the ones that came to mind over a cup and a half of coffee. Bill Gates' delusions of innovation gave me a good chuckle. I think their most original idea in Windows Vista is that they added a Red Screen of Death to go with the blue one. I suppose the next version of Windows after Vista will give us random colors when the computer comes to a grinding halt. Maybe the Media Center PCs it even will play some soothing music when we get the BSOD.

But hey, they did give us Minesweeper, Solitaire, and Freecell. ;-)

People get understandably wary of Google much for the same reason people are wary of Microsoft: They are huge and perceived as having their fingers into too many things.

I'm not a Microsoft guy, obviously, but I think legitimate competition is good for the industry. Having options for OSes, applications, etc. is all good and having a Microsoft is beneficial as long as they don't abuse their monopoly power. I do use Office for the Mac and am pretty happy with it. If Apple came out with a fully competing product (iWork isn't there yet), I might consider a switch only because I know it would take advantage with some of the Mac-specific features that Office doesn't. Even then, Office would never leave my hard drive.

I just get a big chuckle when I hear Microsoft casting aspersions at Google, particularly when Bill Gates accuses them of building their business on 'me too' products. For the points I raised above, one can make a reasonable argument that Microsoft is the poster child of building a business on 'me too' products. That said, I wish Bill Gates no ill will: after all he was one of the first developers for the Mac!

google is an crap,

do an search for toolbars in google, and you would get the result of google toolbar as first.

what does this prove about them.

If you are up to try a little exercise: Go to MSN and enter "Search Toolbar" into their search. Who do you think is number one? Right, "MSN Toolbar" Now, try the same search at Google. Who do you think is number one? Also, "MSN Toolbar". So they are the same. Now, use you're example ("Toolbar") on both search engines. "Google Toolbar" is the top result in both cases.

So, if the top result is exactly the same at both MSN and Google, I don't understand your criticism.

I just want to be clear and say that I don't have necessarily have Google-colored glasses and that some of the criticism against them is probably well-founded. However, I do think that much of what you've been pointing out about them could just as easily apply to Microsoft. And, not being a very big fan of Microsoft, I'm happy to see someone else that can throw around enough weight to get Microsoft riled up.

Google is writing a new play book for online services that is forcing Microsoft to compete on a level playing field again, just as Apple has written a new set rules for digital music in which Windows Media isn't the dominant player. Competition is good.
