How do affiliate programs work?

Hi

Basically what you do in affiliate programs is sell someone else's product. For instance, if you have a website or blog, and you place your affiliate link on your site, and then someone who visits your site buys that product, you make a commission. There are alot of good affiliate programs to join, you just have to choose what you're interested in promoting.

An affiliate program is where a company offers to pay you a certain amount of money for either a click through from your site, or a fixed amount for a lead (where the visitor signs up for a newsletter, etc.) or a percentage of a purchase made by a visitor as a result of a click through.

To me it's not only important what i'm interested in promoting.

Here are a few things which i take into consideration:

I investigate the landing page of the affiliate program to see if it is a landingpage which would convince me to place an order. Experience tells me a lot i think.

I ask the provider to send me a free issue to investigate the quality of the product before offering it to my visitors or list. If i don't get any response or the provider declines my request than that to me means that they aren't convinced of their own product.

I am conducting a search on the net to see how many people already promote the product and how they do this, perhaps reviews and that kind of stuff.

I also check the amount of similar products which are on offer, to see what kind of competition i'm facing.

Finally I try to get other marketeers their opinion through forums to see if there are many refunds.

Let's face it, it's no good to promote products which won't sell or give to many refunds because of the poor quality, better save yourself a lot of time.

Jigsaw

Jigsaw brings up one of the best points with affiliate programs. REFUNDS.

Early on I would jump on any program because it was selling hot and ended up hating myself for not looking further into the product because I got clobbered with refunds.

With most Affiliate Network Sites it is not too hard to figure out if a product has a high refund rate.
