I have found that affiliate marketing is not all it is cracked up to be. Too often sponsors cheat affiliates. Paydot and clickbank are also guilty. Best advice - Use affiliate marketing to create a list and to get familiar with online marketing. Take it from there to your area of most interest.

It all depends on who you are talking to. I have made, and continue to make, a lot of money with affiliate marketing. I usually start off as an affiliate to test a new market and then develop my own products if it makes sense.

I do agree that you have to be careful with the merchants you work with. However, there are good merchants out there.

I believe the affiliate business model is the best way to get started as a newbie. I also consider social business models like network marketing, mlm, and direct sales to be affiliate-type models.

The reason it makes so much sense to get started this way is because you don't have to worry about product development, customer service, and a number of other challenges involved with selling your own products. It is one of the only business models that allows you to focus almost exclusively on marketing. This is great when you are just getting started. Anyone who tells you different most likely has an agenda.

It certainly is true that you have to be careful on which merchants you work with and it is also true there are good merchants out there. Of course, for someone just starting out, THAT is precisely the challenge! That's why I appreciate forums like this... you can come in and ask... and from what I've seen so far... get an honest answer in respectful tones.
